Text Box: He was born in Maryland. His parents were part American and African American. Banneker worked as a writer, inventor, mathematician, and astronomer. He was self-educated. He surveyed, or mapped out, the capital of Washington, D.C. in 1791. He published an almanac detailing the motions of the moon, suns, planets and stars. He presented a copy to Thomas Jefferson, along with a letter calling for better treatment of enslaved African Americans.

He served under George Washington at Valley Forge, PA during the winter of 1777-78 and became known for his pencil portraits of officers, including Washington. None of the Presidential electors voted against Washington. The government first met in New York in March 1789, and Washington was inaugurated, sworn into office, on April 30.
