The
Arts
In addition to special classes in music and art, Queen
of Angels is proud to offer a strong arts experience to our students.
We participate in multi-week artist residencies through the Ohio
Arts Council’s “Artist in Education” program.
We also offer a number of dramatic experiences, ranging from small
classroom productions of simple stories or student-written skits,
to whole-school productions (such as “The Wizard of Oz”),
complete with lights, sound, scenery and costumes.
Art
In the pre-primary classroom, a wide variety of art activities
are available, and art is an integral part of the entire curriculum.
In the elementary classroom, art projects are natural extensions
of the classroom work. For example, a child can make a tapestry
of geometric figures, a three-dimensional salt map of a continent,
or a mural of Colonial life. These projects reinforce and expand
academic and artistic skills.
Elementary
students also participate in weekly art classes taught by an art
teacher. Children explore a variety of media, techniques, and
skills, and also study the work of great artists. Art classes
are taught in small groups of 12 children to maximize teacher
assistance.
Music
Kindergarten and elementary students participate in weekly music
classes taught by a music specialist. At the kindergarten level,
we emphasize the MusikGarten approach, which includes singing,
listening, dance, rhythm, stories and poetry. The elementary classes
use the Orff-Schulwerk approach, which emphasizes rhythm, hands-on
work with barred instruments (xylophones, glockenspiels, etc.),
and opportunities for composition. Movement, singing, and oral
language are also continued, and upper elementary students learn
to play the recorder. All music classes are taught in small groups
of 10-12 children to maximize student participation.
Music
is also part of the life of the regular classroom for all students,
where children are regularly found singing and playing the bells
and tone bars (Montessori music equipment). Music activities also
complement the child’s work. National anthems, folk songs,
and historical ballads key into the social studies areas, for
instance. Writing music and plays provides occasion for dramatic
integration of all the arts: drama, speech, painting, literature.
Speech
and Language Services
Queen of Angels provides speech/language therapy and individualized
reading tutoring for students who qualify. These services are
provided on-site during the school day.
Spanish
Research indicates that frequent contact and instruction are essential
in learning a foreign language. Beginning at age three, all Queen
of Angels students have Spanish class three times per week. Our
Spanish instructor meets with small groups of 8-12 children.
Instruction
is conversational in nature, and the subject matter relates to
the children's general classroom work. For example, in the preschool
classroom the sensorial materials offer a wealth of opportunities
for concrete ways to interact in Spanish. Using these materials,
color, shape, size and texture as well as themes from cultural
studies can all be explored in Spanish. Similarly in the elementary
classes, Spanish units of study will include and reinforce the
regular classroom curriculum. The instruction is dynamic and proficiency-based:
Spanish is the language of communication used for songs, games
and interactive and hands-on activities. By minimizing the use
of English, children do not depend on their native language, but
instead begin to key in on the vocabulary in order to understand
and interact in Spanish. Print material and systematic instruction
with grammar and instruction will be part of the 7th and 8th grade
experience as students progress in their study of Spanish.
Physical
Education
Physical education is likewise integrated into the day. Some examples
include gardening; movement activities outside or in our multi-purpose
room; playing soccer, basketball and other lunchtime sports; and
walking to various local community resources.
Elementary
students participate in weekly physical education classes taught
by a physical education teacher, in which they learn a wide variety
of skills, games, and concepts.
Extracurricular
Activities and Sports
After-school activities include:
- Dance
classes
- Destination
Imagination, a creative thinking program that also builds teamwork,
leadership, and good listening skills
- Scouting
groups organized by parents
- Sports
teams, including soccer, basketball, volleyball, and baseball.
These teams are coached by parents and compete in local leagues.
Athletic
Queen of Angels Montessori fields school teams in soccer and basketball.
Queen of Angels students also actively participate in a variety
of other sports through CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) and
other recreational organizations. Parent representatives are available
to introduce your child to a potential Queen of Angels teammate
through both school and community teams. Boosters organization
